  • In the wake of medicine's growing recognition of the role of psychological factors in illness; hypnosis has become a recognized therapeutic tool in the treatment of smoke addiction, weight control, phobias, physical pain and mental disorders.

    Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, which feels like something between sleeping and waking, and has qualities of both these states. In general, hypnotized subjects find that their body is deeply relaxed, almost in a state of sleep, while their subconscious mind becomes very alert. This state of consciousness is what makes hypnosis an excellent tool for unlocking buried memories, or for discovering hidden motives.

    A hypnotic state can be induced in a number of ways. The therapist may have the patient relax and focus on a spot until the eyes become heavy, or roll the eyes up into the head and then shut them, or imagine that an arm feels lighter and lighter until it seems to float in the air, or fantasize about lying on a beach.
    What happens next depends on the therapist and the particular problem. One of the most promising aspects of hypnosis is its ability to help some people live with chronic pain, such as that caused by back ailments or cancer.  While in trance, patients have learned to escape pain by visualizing themselves in another place or imagining that the aching is numb.


    Stop Smoking 

    For centuries, people smoked tobacco, which comes from the plant nicotiana tabacum. The reason tobacco is used by so many people is because it contains a powerful drug known as nicotine, that is very addictive. When tobacco is smoked, nicotine is absorbed by the lungs and quickly moved into the bloodstream where it is circulated throughout the brain. All of this happens very rapidly. In fact, nicotine reaches the brain within 8 seconds after someone inhales tobacco smoke. Nicotine can also enter the bloodstream through the mucous membranes that line the mouth and even through the skin.



    Nicotine affects the entire body. Nicotine acts directly on the heart rate and blood pressure. It also acts on the nerves that control respiration to change breathing patterns. In high concentrations, nicotine is deadly; in fact, one drop of purified nicotine on the tongue will kill a person. It is so lethal that it has been used as a pesticide for centuries. 

    Every smoker is injured to some degree with every cigarette he or she lights. A one pack a day smoker puts one quart of tobacco tar into his or her lungs every year. As the lungs are painted with this sticky tar, chemicals cause the lungs to become still and lose their elasticity, a condition known as emphysema.



    One of the most significant facts about emphysema is that it is irreversible and incurable. Once the lung tissue has lost its elasticity and the air sacs have been ruptured, the lungs' function has been permanently destroyed.



       Lung cancer is the leading cause of all cancer deaths, and the vast majority of lung cancers are caused by cigarette smoking. The reason that lung cancer is particularly dangerous is because very early in its development, the cancer is prone to spread throughout the bloodstream to other organs in the body. By the time the cancer is found, it has often spread to the liver, brain and bones.

    Hypnosis has been used very effectively and safely for smoke cessation.  Records have shown that hypnosis is one of the most effective modalities in dealing with smoke cessation. But like any instrument, most of its success depends on its operator. Using hypnosis for effective smoke cessation is combining a positive attitude from the hypnotist with specific skills and suggestions.


    Stress Management and Relaxation 

    Everyone responds to stress differently.  Sometimes people don’t even know what they are stressed about.  Stress can be both negative and positive!  Here are some examples of stress causing events:

    Negative: illness, death of a loved one, divorce, being fired from a job, and failing in school.

    Positive: getting married, buying and moving into a new home, leaving home for the first time (like going to college), and a promotion or change in responsibilities.

    Stress does affect the body physically and emotionally.  Some examples are: hypertension, heart attack, stroke, obesity, being underweight, sleep problems, sadness, and frustration.  Also, if a person is stressed it can negatively affect your immune system and possibly delay or prevent healing.

    Weight Management / Weight Loss 

    Considering that more than half the population in the United States has a weight problem, the market for a professional hypnotist dealing with the overweight individual is almost endless. But, to be successful, the practitioner will have to master great hypnotic techniques with knowledge of nutrition and individual (client) motivation.

    Obesity is a state of excessive fatness; being 20 percent over our individual ideal weight. By far the most common cause of obesity is simply an excess of calorie intake over calorie output or eating too much and exercising too little.

    Statistics show if a person is 25 percent overweight, his or her death rate is 1.7 times normal. A person who is 40 percent overweight has a death rate 2.2 times normal. Hypertension, heart disease, strokes, gall bladder disease, diabetes and arthritis are common examples of problems markedly increased by obesity.

    Having in-depth knowledge of nutrition and the effects of overeating or poor nutrition on the human body is essential as a complete approach to dealing with weight control in an effective manner. The client will feel more confident about the result of hypnosis if he or she feels that the hypnotist is knowledgeable. The most important aspect of the treatment is the hypnosis itself with the choices of the proper suggestions.
